Being a Hummingbird Stalker is an Exhausting Job

Hummingbirds are such fantastic little creatures. Weighing less than a dime and flying faster than most residential traffic speeds, they often appear to be a butterfly at first glance because of their tiny size. Hummingbirds often represent peace, joy, and vitality, so oftentimes when one comes out of nowhere I am reminded that there are many joyous things in life to see.

Getting the right photos of hummingbirds can be an exhausting job. Like a cat, I sit and wait and watch. And wait. After a lot of time and patience, standing still for several minutes or hours in the hot sun, it makes it worth it. See for yourself.

I believe this is a female ruby-throated hummingbird.

    • Thank you! And good question! I used different cameras to capture these. One was a Sony point and shoot, at which it was 1/640. The other was a Nikon at 1/2000. Surprisingly, the point and shoot are the clearer shots.

    • Interesting! I don’t see them long enough to notice their behavior with other birds, but I would imagine that due to their tiny size that they’d have to be territorial just for survival purposes.
