Snakes Alive! A Few of Florida’s Creatures

I’m not a big fan of anything creepy-crawly, and for me that includes snakes. But they do serve a purpose on our planet. As long as I know they’re not poisonous, I will get close enough to take pictures of them if I can. They’re more afraid of us than we are of them.

This little guy is a yellow rat snake. He’s harmless and actually kind of cute. The worst he does is eat chicken eggs.

This guy was in the woods on a path at a state park. I didn’t even notice him until my dog almost went after him. He’s not the kind of snake you want to be near, and you would definitely want to keep your pets away. He’s a pigmy rattlesnake and deadly.

This little guy seems really intimidating, mainly because of his coloring and the fact that he’s chomping down on a lizard. But he’s a harmless Scarlet Kingsnake, and is often mistaken for the deadly Eastern Coral Snake. People misidentify the two types all the time, and unfortunately, end up killing the Kingsnake. So there are little rhymes that are supposed to help us remember… even though most of the time no one actually remembers them.

‘If red touches black, it is a friend of Jack’

Scarlet King Snake

Poor lizard.
