Wallflower – Self Portrait

I drew this when I was a first-year art student at Daytona Beach Community College (now called Daytona State). It was part of a series of 3 graphite drawings incorporated with poetry. Drawing wasn’t particularly my favorite class, especially when it came to (boring) graphite.

“Wallflower” is the title of this piece, and as you can see, a young woman lives within the brick wall of a daisy in a similar container. Both the flower and the woman view the outside world together, yet individually.

The poem reads:

Life is a daisy…
So beautiful, yet
so contained,
so limited…

So alive, yet
so mortal,
so morbid…

So massive, yet
so miniscule…

So questionable.
